Justus Falckner, born in Germany, came to the new world in 1700 as an attorney and surveyor. Arriving in Pennsylvania, Falckner met Swedish missionaries, who three years later recommended him to a Dutch congregation in New York. On November 24, 1703, Falckner was the first Lutheran to be ordained in America. Falckner's parish grew and included African Americans and Native Americans. He wrote hymns and later founded New Hanover Lutheran Church in New Hanover, PA.
