These lines must be four feet (1.2 meters) wide and deep enough that there is no longer any vegetation, explains Thiessen, National Geographic staff photographer.  If a fire is low enough, crews can dig right next to the fire, the photographer explained. If that's not possible, then crews will dig their line, then burn everything back to the active blaze.
