Harry Payne Whitney (1872-1930) American thoroughbred horsebreeder, son of wealthy businessman William C. Whitney. In 1904, H.P. inherited $24,000,000 from his father & in 1917 $12,000,000 from his uncle, Oliver Hazard Payne. In 1896 he married Gertrude Vanderbilt, a member of the wealthy Vanderbilt family. In 1915 he established a horse breeding farm in Lexington, Kentucky. Harry Payne Whitney's estate was appraised by New York State for tax collection purposes at $62,808,000 net
