Despite claims that he feared her style would be a campaign liability, he vigorously praised her intelligence in a heated discussion with reporter Laura Berquist, and in a private memo to his staff, he scribbled a single line to them that made his intentions clear: “We need to promote her more.” With all he had to focus on out on the trail, Kennedy remained preoccupied with her.
