In his book The White Goddess, the author Robert Graves proposed that the mythological figure of the Holly King represents one half of the year, while the other is personified by his counterpart and adversary the Oak King: the two battle endlessly as the seasons turn.

Before and After: Our hearth room!  What a difference a coffered ceiling, painted fireplace, gray walls, and dark wood floors make!  Walls are Sherwin Williams March Wind and trim is Benjamin Moore Moonlight White in semi-gloss (fireplace is eggshell finish).  The oak hardwood floors were sanded and re-stained a deep espresso brown by Walk on Wood (Rochester, MN).  Special thanks to Karen at Design Studio B and Mike Allen Builders.
