JFK & GEORGE WALLACE. Segregationist George Wallace began his career in the Alabama state legislature in 1947 as a Democrat. He was the governor of Alabama as a Democrat off and on from 1963 through 1987. He ran for US President as a Democrat in '64, '72, and '76. Except for running one time on a third party ticket in '68 for president, George Wallace was a lifelong Democrat.
