The Olmec colossal heads are monumental stone representations of human heads sculpted from large basalt boulders dated from at least before 900 BC. It is likely that they were portraits of living (or recently deceased) rulers. It is also possible that they represent rulers equipped for the Mesoamerican ballgame. Expressions depicted on the heads vary from stern through placid to smiling. Mysterious!

The most recognized aspect of the Olmec civilization are the enormous helmeted heads. The Olmec are now recognized as the predecessors of the Maya and Aztec civilizations.
