I loved this magical moment at Lapataia. We were standing on a bridge over a small stream with life and color all around.

A quiet morning viewing the statue of Uruguay’s national hero, José Artigas, outside the Intendencia of Maldonado.

The original stone well in the courtyard of the old army barracks in Maldonado, Uruguay. I love old wells and old construction in general. I’ve been known to hop a few fences to check out abandoned properties. So I loved exploring the barracks from 1771. They are just across from the cathedral in Maldonado’s square.

Some pre-asado nibbles. Most asados in Uruguay begin with cured sausage, cheese, bread, peanuts, and whiskey, wine, beer, or sodas. It just gives everyone something to snack on while the larger cuts of meat are cooking. Asados often include chorizos and grilled provolone because they cook quickly and can be munched on before the other meats finish.

I always appreciated Jeff Goldblum’s character’s quote in Jurassic Park. His character, Ian Malcolm, said: Life will find a way. Of course he was referring to dinosaurs, but the idea fits here. A beautiful little healthy plant, complete with flowers, growing on a stone wall. It is a good lesson.

Montevideo, Uruguay. This is a walking street leading down to the big eating area, Mercado del Puerto. I’m pretty sure that’s the port customs building at the end of the street.
