This has sold tremendously well and is a Newbery Award winner. It's good that this book brings the evacuee experience to a new American audience. However, it just didn't resonate with me. The London East End accents weren't right. I questioned the premise of girl not going to school in a country that had compulsory Education since 1870. I come from an English village and this book just didn't build a world I recognized particularly regarding sense of place and class.
