Tolkien frequently used when writing in a formal style. At the time of the painting the name of the Father of Dragons was Glórund, not Glaurung, and for the reproduction in the Calendar I rewrote the Old English lettering in precisely similar form in order to introduce the name by which the Dragon is known in the published work.
