Francis de Groot, an Irish national who later moved to Australia, holds an infamous place in the history of Sydney. At the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932, he dressed in a military uniform and rode a horse to blend in with the official party. As NSW Premier Jack Lang was about to cut the ribbon to open the bridge, de Groot rode forward and slashed the ribbon with his sword!
