It has always been Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. However, what we see in this brilliant, intricate stone carving defies this, and has done that close to a thousand years ago. This picture has Brahma, Shiva and only then, Vishnu. The legend has it that the Hoysalas, great Vaishnavites were so magnanimous and respectful of Shivites that they always put the Shivites ahead of themselves when it came to respect and hospitality.
