A large proportion of Chinese women in the late nineteenth century had their feet bound small while they were children.  The woman seen in this late nineteenth century photograph was an entertainer, a sing-song girl, but footbinding was also practiced by the families of scholars and merchants.

Footbinding in China involved breaking the arch of the foot and folding it backwards until a tiny index card appendage remained called "golden lotus feet.

Finely crafted, well executed cared of a Lotus dancer, with the dancer holding a fan in right hand and in the left a staff in which a smaller version of the dancer is climbing upon , very intricate and delicate carving with close attention to every details, artist's signature on the base, late 19th century Meiji period. Size; Measurements of this carving are 6"H x 3.5"L .
