Jean Renoir (15 Sept 1894 – 12 Feb1979) was a French film director, screenwriter, actor, producer & author who made more than 40 films from the silent era to the end of the 1960s. He was the 2nd son of Aline (née Charigot) & the French painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir & can be seen in many of his father's paintings. In 1924, Renoir directed the first of his 9 silent films. These films did not produce a return, and Renoir gradually sold paintings inherited from his father to finance them.
