Herman Leonard (1923-2010) - After an apprenticeship to a portrait photographer of famous people, he began a career of shooting jazz musicians and singers in America and Europe, including sessions behind the Iron Curtain. His collection is now archived in the Smithsonian. While many of his prints were destroyed during the flooding of New Orleans by Hurrican Katrina, his negatives have all been preserved.
Dorothy Janis (Dorothy Penelope Jones) (1912-2010) - Janis was best known for playing opposite Ramon Novarro in the film The Pagan (1929). Edith Shain passed away this past Sunday at the age of 93. I was the last photographer to photograph Edith for my book. She truly was the sweetest and most vivacious lady I have ever met.
