Terracotta Loutrophoros (ceremonial vase for water), Greek, Attic, black-figured, late 6th century B.C., Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2009. This kind of vases were used to fetch water for the bridal bath and in certain funerary ceremonies. This one was made without a bottom (which indicated that it was used in a funerary ceremony) so the offerings poured into it could reach the dead under the ground.
