"The bad days are over! Papa is earning money in Germany!" Vichy France, STO (Service du Travail Obligatoire) (Compulsory Work Service), ca. 1940-1944. STO was the forced enlistment and deportation of hundreds of thousands of French workers to Nazi Germany in order to work as forced labour. The STO was created under laws and regulations of Vichy France, but it was used by Germany to compensate for the loss of manpower as it drafted more and more soldiers for the Eastern Front.
