An illustration from the tale of the death of the god Balder.  Following Balder's death Odin sends his messenger Hermod to beg Hela the goddess of death for Balder's return.  Hela agrees    These are photographs of book illustrations from 'Myths of the Norsemen' by H. A. Guerber.  They have been taken from my own copy of the book which was printed in 1908.
