The Player opening scene: it was my freshman yr in college when I really looked at films differently -- largely due to this film. I'd read about it in the paper and went to see it just for the 8-min one long take opening scene. Even more importantly, I was introduced to the world of Robert Altman.

Gosford Park (2001) - Before Downtown Abbey, there was Gosford Park. Both written by Julian Fellowes. Both star the incomparable Dame Maggie Smith. Both explore class struggle and the separate worlds--upstairs and downstairs--of life in the English countryside at a time when the British aristocracy and Empire were nearing the end of an era. Must-see from director Robert Altman. Great cinematography and camera work.
