Southern Hog-nosed Snake...one of the "good-guys". Sometimes it is mistaken for a Florida pygmy rattler. But - truly - if you can stop running long enough - the Hog-nose has some very distinctive markings. Body is gray-brown to tan; tail underside is the same color as the belly. Back marked with irregular, dark brown-black blotches, often separated by orange-red blotches along the spine. Forehead is marked with a dark band. When threatened, it may play dead or flatten its neck and hiss.
