Smallest square London’s smallest open public space is Pickering Place, off St. James’s Street, SW1—and alongside Berry Brothers and Rudd wine merchants, established by the Widow Bourne in 1698. The widow’s son-in-law, James Pickering, created Pickering Court, which would later become notorious for bear-baiting; as the site of the last duel fought with swords in London; and, in a fact recorded on a plaque, the home of the legation, or embassy, “for the ministers from the…

Pickering Place in St. James's is one of if not the smallest square in London. Built in the 1730's by William Pickering whose mother-in-law started the grocers shop from which nearby Berry Brothers & Rudd is descended. The Legation was a sort of embassy of the Republic of Texas whilst it was a sovereign nation in North America formed following…

Morgane's holiday pick for our Advent Calendar is THE SCANDALOUS SISTERHOOD OF PRICKWILLOW PLACE by Julie Berry. "In a Victorian school for girls, the headmistress and her brother fall dead at Sunday supper. The 7 young students then decide to hide the curious deaths (and bodies) in order to remain together and free. Extremely entertaining, full of dark humor, wit, mystery, and great characters. Berry must be, like a critic said, the child of Agatha Christie and David Sedaris!"
