No survivors were found on board the Ourang Medan in June, 1947, but what was most disturbing was the nature of the bodies, all frozen in place looking up towards the sun, their arms outstretched, mouths gaping, and a look of immense horror on all their faces. A trip to the communications room revealed the author of the SOS messages, also dead, his hand still on the Morse sending key, eyes wide open and teeth bared. Strangely, there was no sign of wounds or injuries on any of the bodies.

Millie and Christine McCoy (1851-1912) were conjoined twins born into slavery.  They and their mother were sold to a showman, Joseph Smith.  Smith and his wife educated the girls; they eventually could speak five languages, dance, play music, and sing.  They were known as 'The Two Headed Nightingale'.  In the 1880s they retired and purchased a small farm.  Millie died of tuberculosis at age 61, with Christine following hours later.  They remain one of the oldest-lived set of conjoined twins.

The Gunness children were found in the ashes of the home, as well as the body of a headless woman.The LaPorte County Sheriff began to further investigate the fire and Belle's relations with out-of-town men. The investigation turned into a national sensation, as numerous bodies were soon found to be buried on Belle's farm.It has been estimated that Belle may have buried forty men on the farm..
