The maned wolf, a native of the plains of Argentina and Brazil. It has also been described as a fox on stilts but in fact it is not related to either foxes and modern day wolves. It's closest relative is the dire wolf which went extinct back when humans came over the land bridge from Siberia. Oddly enough, it is not a carnivore, 50% of of its diet is from vegetation and a tomato like plant called a wolf fruit. Even more oddly, its pee apparently smells like marijuana.
The maned wolf is the largest of the South American canids. It looks like a large fox with reddish fur and long, deer-like legs. The mammal is found in open habitats like grasslands with scattered bushes and trees. The tall legs are likely an adaptation to the tall grasslands of its native habitat.
