The Trona Pinnacles is one of the most unusual geological features in the Mojave desert of California. Spires columns some as high as 140 feet (43 m) formed when springs met other bodies of water. These strange shapes formed underwater 10,000 to 100,000 years ago. The pinnacles did not all form at the same time. They are divided by age and elevation into three groups. The groups are dubbed the northern, middle, and southern groups because they formed during three ice ages.
Tonya Colson Photography Desert X Racing, somewhere near Abu Dhabi: Next time you're zooming in on sports action, zoom out too. A wider angle can show the environment, and give an sense of place to your shots. By zooming out here, I was able show the scale of the dunes and (hopefully) what it was like to race over that terrain. The curved lines of the dunes and the curved line of the sand roost balanced the composition of the shot. Rider: Paul Rivet
