Willamette Falls are more than just the second largest waterfall in the US by volume (behind only Niagara Falls). They are an important part of the history of Oregon City, going back even before the pioneers began settling here. Native American tribes gathered here for centuries and caught lamprey in the falls. The falls later powered the growth of Oregon City and nearby Portland when pioneers harnessed their might to generate electricity.
