This is a Wool Carder bee in flight see guarding its patch of Lamb's ear in Eastbourne. These insects are unusual in that the males are larger than the females and this is likely to do with their territorial nature. These bees attack and carry off anything similar to their size that flies too close to their 'pick-up' joint! Fascinating beasties!
