Cattail Falls Trail at Big Bend National Park You won't find this trail on the map, and you won't hear it advertised anywhere, so it's a true hidden oasis in the otherwise arid land. After heavy rainfall, the waterfall at top of the trail will cascade over the canyons, making the grueling trek totally worth it. Pictured above is the waterfall in early spring.

The Rio Grande Tunnel in Big Bend National Park was built in 1959.  This iconic tunnel is located two miles north of Rio Grande Village.  It was the first highway tunnel built in the state of Texas.

If you have a week, you can explore the best West Texas has to offer.

Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, TX. Paddle upstream fr Santa Elena Canyon Trailhead, a few miles into the canyon, and return downstream ("boomerang" trip). If water level is low, you do not have to fight the current much going upstream, making this trip quite leisurely. An ideal trip if you do not have a shuttle back to your starting point.  See Fern Canyon, about two miles upstream. Backcountry permit required. No day-use fee.
