March 16 2013 A Russian satellite was recently destroyed in a collision with a piece of space debris, highlighting the growing concern that the low-Earth orbit is too congested. Space debris travels at speeds of close to 29,000 km/h, which poses a deadly risk to astronauts. NASA estimates that over 500,000 objects larger than a marble and 22,000 bigger than a softball surround the Earth. The low-earth orbit is around 2000 km above the planet.
