NEWS GOTHIC was designed by MF Benton for American Type Founders in 1908. The original design, with two condensed faces, is really a light version of Franklin Gothic. In the late 1940s, after a decline in popularity due to the success of European sans typefaces like Gill Sans, Futura, Kabel, American gothic type made a comeback. During this time new versions of News Gothic were designed, including bold in 1955. Like Franklin, these faces are classics for headlines, advertising & packaging.
This watch advertisement by Frederique Constant points out that a portion of their proceeds are donated to charity, enough for a heart scan. As this watch is backed up by a good cause, any buyers of this model would feel accomplished, as they would have indirectly donated towards a "life-saving heart scan" at the International Children's Heart Foundation and the American Heart Association.
