NLÉ architects: floating school in makoko

Knot, Ladder, Backpacks

This is a school in the Makoko community, a slum built on stilts in the Lagos Lagoon off the coast of Nigeria. The three-story Makoko Floating School, designed by Nigerian architect Kunlé Adeyemi, has classrooms and a playground, and when classes are out, the first floor serves as a town square where the fishermen mend their nets and floating shopkeepers dock their boats.

Makoko Floating School is a prototype floating structure, built for the historic water community of Makoko, located on the lagoon heart of Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos.
