This is the third in a series of six engravings, called A Harlot's Progress. William Hogarth experimented with modern moral subjects, satirizing the world and society in which he lived. He creates these wonderful storylines that capture the life and times of the often unfortunate individual. In this engraving, our hero Moll Hackabout has become a common prostitute, with her syphilis-infected nurse tending to her. Hogarth parodies the Annunciation.
