Dante Gabriel Rossetti, "La Bella Mano", detail. I don't get Rossetti. He has a great knack for painting a man, adding breasts, and calling it a woman. Did he have no idea what women are like, or did the women around him look like that? They also have such prominent chins. Again, did his models all have them, or did he end up adding that feature every time? I think this girl, the sister of one of his muses and not the focus of the piece, is genuinely pretty. Guess we just have different…

Proserpine (1874). Dante Gabriel Rossetti (English, Pre-Raphaelite, 1828‑1882). Oil paint on canvas. Tate. Proserpine, Empress of Hades, was allowed to return to earth, provided only she had not partaken of any of the fruits of Hades. But she had eaten one grain of a pomegranate, and this enchained her to her new empire and destiny. She is represented in a gloomy corridor of her palace, with the fatal fruit in her hand.
