Pierrot and Pierrette - the French versions of Harlequin and Columbine.  They were likable, clownlike figures in a pantheon of other characters known in Italy as "Comedia Del Arte". They had multiple origins, not the least being the Court Jesters of medieval & Renaissance Europe.
