Lewis W. Hine (Wisconsin, 1874 - New York, 1940) socioloog en fotograaf behoort tot de fameuze fotografen als Joel Meyerowitz, Robert Frank, Robert Capa, Eugène Atget, waaraan het Nederlands Fotomuseum indrukwekkende tentoonstellingen heeft gewijd. Hine staat bekend als de 20ste eeuwse pionier van de sociaal documentaire fotografie. Typerend voor Hine is dat hij sterk geloofde in de overtuigingskracht van de fotografie. Gewapend met zware camera vocht hij voor sociale rechtvaardigheid.

Lewis Hine, gamin de Paris, Lewis Wickes Hine was an American sociologist and photographer. Hine used his camera as a tool for social reform. His photographs were instrumental in changing the child labor laws in the United States.
