The Calling of St. Matthew Caravaggio c. 1600 - “Jesus saw a man named Matthew at his seat in the custom house, and said to him, "Follow me"” (Matthew 9:9). Painted during the Catholic Reformation, this work of propaganda functioned as a Bible for the illiterate. Our eyes are guided through the scene by a beam of divine light, echoed by a series of gestures pointing towards Matthew, slumped at the table.
