Ritchie Valens 1941 – 1959 was a Mexican-American singer, songwriter and guitarist. A completely self-taught musician, he often improvised new lyrics and added new riffs to popular songs while he was playing. This is an aspect of his music that is not heard in his commercial studio recordings.

Ritchie Valens died in the plane crash that also took Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper, but we'll remember him for La Bamba.

In 1749, Spain settled the area we now call the Rio Grande Valley, thus was born the Tejano. Because of the remoteness of South Texas at the time and its proximity of Mexico, Tejano culture was very much tied to the Mexican states of Nuevo Leon and Tamalipas. These ties continue today and are a strong influence on the Tejano culture.
