On Saturday afternoon, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum hosted Gretchen Peters as part of the “Poets and Prophets” interview series it conducts with songwriters who have made “significant contributions to country music history.”

Feeling bad has rarely sounded as good as it does coming from singer-songwriter Gretchen Peters. Her latest album, "Blackbirds," is an unflinching collection of songs meditating on mortality.

Downtown Franklin, Tenn., provided the perfect setting last Friday night for Gretchen Peters' album release party/performance. Like the record, the town's Main Street is charming, pristine, and just a little bit out of the way. And, also like the record, the performance was refined, restrained, and just about perfect.

The deepest catharsis though came from Gretchen Peters who is being more frank than ever in her songs about tragedy, violence and grief. “The only cure for the pain is the pain” she sang at one point. And yet with folk alchemy at work, tales of fratricide (“Blackbirds”), Post Traumatic Stress (“When All You Got Is A Hammer”) and the devastation of an out-of-control oil spill (“Black Ribbons”) filled my heart and felt gorgeous in my ears.
