The literary establishment needs to not just encourage and promote more writing from working-class writers, young and old, but also move past assumptions that working-class young boys, for example, won’t want to write poems. The seemingly endless debates about what counts as “proper” poetry and what is “merely spoken word” are fuelled by a need to define and control the artform, and do little more than alienate the people who enjoy poems under, or identify with, this label.

On National Poetry Day we should be championing the artform’s diversity
