Heddal Stave church. - Heddal Stave church (Notodden, Telemark) is the largest of the remaining 28 stave churches in Norway. It was build some time after 1200. About 25-30% of the original material is still in place. No metal nails were used, only wooden nails. The outside wood surface is protected by tar, which is applied regularly. It is not allowed to attach scaffoldings around the church, so mountain climbers are hired to do the job. The tarring is done manually using brushes.
