John II of Aragon - the Faithless. Brother to Alfonso. The marriage of his son would united the kingdoms of Aragon and Castile to become Spain. He was married to Blanche I of Navarre and was granted the kingdom of Navarre upon her death. His son, Charles, was the heir of Navarre and John came to look at his son with jealousy and eventually, absolute hatred. A civil war ensued which resulted in Charles’s death, perhaps poisoned by his step mother.

Alfonso XI was ruled by regent because he was so young. As soon as he took the throne, he began working hard to strengthen royal power by dividing his enemies. He earned a reputation because of the ferocity with which he repressed the disorders caused by the nobles during his long minority. He killed for reasons of state without any form of trial. He openly neglected his wife, Maria of Portugal, and indulged a scandalous passion for Eleanor of Guzman, who bore him ten children.
