Chips, a WWII Dog, received a Silver Star and a Purple Heart for his participation, but had them stripped away when dogs were reclassified in the military as "equipment," making him the last canine to be officially decorated. He was a tank guard dog in Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. Chips is best known for the time he jumped into an enemy pillbox while he and his handler were under fire in Sicily, and forced the soldiers to come out and surrender.
