Villa Rosa interiors: The foyer. Between the forecourt and the entrance hall lay a gallery-like foyer with 3 arched windows on each side. This could be used as dining space for midnight suppers. At each end, Codman placed copies of existing 18th century sculptures, carved in marble like the originals. JC

Manderston ext: The house from the air. Note the light well and skylights. A later photo will show windows onto that light well, and you'll gain a sense of the scale of the house. At the top end lies the service court, engulfed in trees. JC

Villa Rosa interiors: The entrance hall. This simple room would be over-large for the size of the house, but it's purpose was as a supper room for balls and dinner-dances. For the socially ambitious, the comfort and convenience of one's arrangements for such occasions could make the difference between entering the golden circle or not. JC

Whitney 27: Looking back at the west wall of the ballroom. On the left is the conservatory, and on the right is the entrance from the Ballroom Passage. The Louis XIV boiserie is 18th century, with additions made to match. White managed to squeeze a musician's gallery into the scheme. JC

Manderston int: The Drawing Room. The spectacular ceiling is painted Sir James's racing colors; primrose and white. The reproduction furniture was intended to be grouped at the edges of the room, in 18th century style. During parties, I'm certain the chairs moved out into informal groupings in the typical Edwardian fashion. JC

Manderston int: The Dining Room Anteroom. To grasp the layout, I eventually figured out that transverse hallways preceed and follow the grand central space of the Hall. The ends of these hallways form anterooms to three rooms, and one becomes the Stairhall. This one runs alongside the fancy cloakroom, which lies to the right of the glazed arches. JC

Lynnewood Hall. One can see the switch to three floors on the trunk of the T. The art gallery runs down the center of the two upper floors. JC

"Le gout Rothschild" is an expression coined in the latter 19th century to describe a kind of opulence that encompassed the very best of everything. The family furnished their homes with that principle, in whichever style was desired. JC
