Haeckel was a German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist, who discovered, described and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all forms of life, and coined many terms in biology, including phylum, phylogeny, ecology and the kingdom Protista.

The Daughters of Ernst Haeckel Collage by LYNN SKORDAL

Ernst Haeckel in Ceylon in the year 1881. Haeckel was Darwin’s biggest German-language promoter. He drew up his own genealogic tree of life, and coined several terms still used in biology (including phylogeny, stem cell, ecology and Protista). He discovered, described and illustrated thousands of new species. Two mountains and an asteroid bear his name. Ernst Haeckel was a true Renaissance man—part philosopher, part scientist, part artist. ~via tentaclesdaily, Wordpres
