For years (even before the invention of the iPad) the design team at MediTouch EHR® has understood how fundamental the move to mobile medicine is and will be for years to come. That is why MediTouch® was designed from the “ground up” for mobile computer tablets. We agree with the industry experts that an EHR not designed for mobile and touch will not work efficiently on a mobile tablet computer.

Free EHR software is a Catch-22! There is no free lunch. “Free” EHRs are not free; in fact, they are expensive. They require a costly ethical compromise — a bet that the great ad-based EHR experiment will work, and a gamble that settling for fewer time-saving features will not lower your practice’s productivity. Is that risk really worth a couple of hundred bucks a month? Most popular advertising-based free EHRs do not come complete with a practice management system and clearinghouse.

As a vendor of a Meaningful Use Certified technology and an approved PQRS EHR/EMR Direct submitter, our team has a vested interest in EHR and PQRS adoption. We would like every provider to take advantage of the EHR incentives now and avoid penalties in the future. The pivotal year for PQRS is 2013 and we are advising our users to focus on preparing for 2013 since 2% of payments are at stake (in 2012 there is just a 0.5% incentive, too small to worry about).

For the past several years the government has been experimenting with quality reporting via the PQRS (aka PQRI) program. PQRS has had very little impact on physician incomes. Change is coming. The iPad® development team at HealthFusion® is following the new iOS changes closely, and we are reviewing each exciting new feature. As certified iPad® developers, we have been privileged to have the opportunity to preview and test Apple’s® new iOS 5. Summary of Care Records in the CDA format are the cornerstone of several Meaningful Use Stage 2 measures. MediTouch EHR through its patient portal, YourHealthFile, and state of the art interface has already made great strides in accomplishing much of what is going to be required in most of the Meaningful Use Stage 2 measures. We remain skeptical about certain parts of the measures that are coupled to the new CDA standard, but not about the standard itself.

The MediTouch Web application works the same on the Mini as it does on the traditional iPad. The screens move quickly, and the text is still large enough to see if you are not far-sighted. If you wear reading glasses to use the larger iPad or if you are under the age of 45, then the Mini will display MediTouch EHR text large enough to read. If you are over 45 and you are beginning to struggle with seeing the text on small devices like the iPhone, then stick with the standard iPad.

As paper patient records are migrated to an EHR, every type of EHR requires the practice to translate their paper information to electronic lists in the EHR. This task can be time-consuming for a practice, and most EHRs do not provide simple solutions that make these tasks easier. With MediTouch EHR® and the YourHealthFile® Patient Portal, your patients can assist you in the initial creation of mandated data lists, such as Medication Lists and Patient Histories.
