In 2012, Kate Ranta’s estranged husband appeared at her apartment in Coral Springs, Florida, and opened fire, shooting her and her dad. Kate nearly died in front of her 4-year-old son. Her estranged husband was barred from possessing a gun due to a domestic violence conviction, but he was still able to easily get his hands on one. In Florida, there is no background check requirement for private firearms sales, and no license or registration required.
