WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — The countries that decide the fate of Antarctica reached an historic agreement on Friday to create the world's largest marine protected area in the ocean next to the frozen continent.

24 countries and the European Union have agreed to set aside a 600,000-square-miles of the waters of the Ross Sea off the coast of Antarctica as a marine protected area.

Covering an area of square miles in the Ross Sea, the reserve is home to penguins, seals and whales.
