Making Shirakawa Daruma dolls (白川だるま) at Watanabe Daruma Shop ~ Shirakawa City, Fukushima Prefecture. Many Japanese start New Year's resolutions by buying a papier mâché figure known as a daruma or dharma doll that will serve as a reminder of goals and wishes for the year. Shirakawa Daruma have been loved since the Edo period (1603–1868) in Shirakawa city. Now, there are only 2 stores still making Shirakawa Daruma. One of them is the Daruma shop run by the Watanabe family (渡辺だるま店).
