The Celtic alphabet known as Ogham (pronounced "Oh-m" or "Oh-wam") was invented, according to the medieval Irish Book of Ballymote, by Ogma Sun-Face, son of Elatha. In comprises three sets of five consonants and one set of five vowels, a total of twenty letters.

The framework of this tale considers the Ogham as 20 symbols, 4 octaves of 5 symbols each (pentatonic) and each symbol sharing a mythology of a tree to reveal its symbol.

The Glagolitic Alphabet is the oldest known Slavic alphabet from the 9th century. The number of letters in the original Glagolitic alphabet is not known, but may have been close to its presumed Greek model. The 41 letters we know today include letters for non-Greek sounds which may have been added by Saint Cyril, as well as ligatures added in the 12th century under the influence of Cyrillic, as Glagolitic lost its dominance.
