Nancy Callahan Dollar was the daughter of a Cherokee father named William Callahan and a half Cherokee Indian, half Irish mother. In her old age she began a tombstone fund, but after she died in January 1931 at the age of 108, a band of thieves broke into her home and stole the money. Her ghost, accompanied by that of her faithful dog "Buster" were seen in the community up until the time that a headstone was erected in 1973 by the town of Mentone, Alabama.
