Bartolomé de las Casas: (1474–1566) A young Spanish adventurer who accompanied Columbus on his second voyage, he received large New World land holdings and native slaves. He was so moved by their suffering that he became a priest, freed his slaves, and finally came to a moral rejection of slavery in any form.
